Citypress Edinburgh hosts Scotland food and drink event

Citypress Edinburgh hosted a special event for some of Scotland’s leading food and drink brands at the Angels with Bagpipes restaurant in the city recently.

Adam Leyland, editor of The Grocer magazine, chaired a discussion about the challenges and opportunities facing food producers and brands North of the Border.

The companies in attendance were almost all family-owned businesses, with long-established brands and reputations. They agreed that the biggest growth opportunities were in export markets, against a backdrop of relatively static growth in the UK grocery sector. This is where the provenance of Scottish food products really matters and can be a competitive advantage.

In a recent survey commissioned by Bank of Scotland (a Citypress Edinburgh client) 44% of businesses in Scotland’s food and drink industry are planning to target one or more new international markets and 43 per cent say they will be investing further to ramp up their export operations.

Next year, the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and Ryder Cup at Gleneagles were discussed as significant international events that can be used to showcase the quality and diversity of the food and drink sector in Scotland.

Product innovation was also discussed. The business leaders all agreed that diversification into new sub-sectors of the food market with products that drive trial and interest in their brands was critical to retaining and growing shelf space.
